Data Race

About Data Race

Mission

The world's statistics are public — but most of it is locked behind spreadsheets and data portals that assume you already know how to read data. Data Race turns open data into bar chart races: a format that makes the story watchable, surfaces unexpected leaders, and reaches people who would never open a CSV. No sign-up, no paywall, no data literacy required.

What Data Race Does

Data from official public sources is turned into interactive animated visualizations that show how countries and regions have changed over time. Nine chart modes — bar, bump, line, streamgraph, pie, treemap, choropleth map, bubble map, and bubble chart — each highlight a different aspect of the data. Every visualization runs entirely in your browser — no server processing, no downloads. Transparency is a core value. All visualizations include direct links to original data sources.

  • Scope filtering to compare entities within regions, sectors, or custom groups
  • Full data table with rankings, values, and period-over-period changes
  • Short-form videos on YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram for bite-sized data stories

Tech Stack

Data Race is a solo project maintained in spare time. Keeping infrastructure costs at zero means it can stay free — no pressure to monetize, no reason to add paywalls.

  • Astro — Static site generation with React Islands for interactive UI
  • React — UI controls, state, and chart toggles
  • Canvas 2D — Direct pixel rendering shared between web (rAF) and Remotion (frame-N determinism)
  • d3 — Projections (d3-geo), layouts (d3-force, treemap.resquarify), scales
  • Remotion — Programmatic video generation for social content
  • Python — Data pipeline and ETL for ingesting and transforming open datasets
  • Cloudflare Pages — Zero hosting cost, global CDN

Support Data Race

Data Race is built and maintained by one person. Hosting is free, so a contribution isn't paying for infrastructure — it's a signal that the work is reaching real people, which is what keeps it going.
